Bayazid Bastami historical complex is located in Bastam, Shahrud County, in the Semnan Province. The mausoleum is one of the finest architectural ensembles in Iran and the most important historical monument in Bastam. It is located in a complex composed of the Bayazid Mausoleum, the Imamzadeh Mohammad Mosque, the Bayazid Bastami Mosque, the Shabestan of Bastam Mosque, the brick minaret, the Khanqah (meeting place of the dervishes) of Bayazid, the dome, the Iwan Ghazan Khan, the Safavid portico and a gonbadkhaneh named « sardabeh ». This complex is located near the Jam’eh mosque in Bastam, the Masasaasaa Shaharkhieh, and the Kashaneh tower.
Bayazid’s tomb is devoid of any decoration and has an iron-covered window. On the tomb is a marble stone engraved with the words of the most famous litanies of Imam Ali Ben Abi Taleb.
It is the second largest Urartian fortress after that of Tushpa. The site holds a unique wealth of cultural heritage. The structures in this three-entrance complex date back to Seljuq, Ilkhanid, Timurid, Safavid, and Qajar eras. The Ilkhanid creations stand out for their meticulous tilework and bricks. The area was part of one of the important cities of the time, formerly known as Qumis, before Islam made its way into Iran. The oldest monument of the Bastam Historical Complex dates back to the 8th and 9th centuries AD. Nevertheless, what most characterizes this complex is the fact that it conserved it authenticity for over a thousand years.
