Necropol Chor Bakr is one of the largest architectural ensembles in Uzbekistan. It is located 6km west of Bukhara in a site known from ancient times as Sumitan. It is also called “town of the dead”. The first and the main grave the necropolis of the complex began to grow was Abu Bakr Saad’s, a descendant of the Prophet Muhammad. Abu Bakr Saad was believed to be the founder of the Juybari dynasty, which once had a great influence on the political and religious life in Bukhara.
It is the construction of the burial structures that distinguishes the Chor-Bakr necropolis from other religious burials in Uzbekistan, for example, from the Shahi- Zinda necropolis. The generalized characteristic of the khazira as a type of a monumental burial structure can be formulated as follows: it is devoid of overlap, a country-oriented building with a burial part, surrounded by walls and an entrance, and decorated with a darvaz.
