Garn Al-Gasba is an old quarter located in Atar City in West-central Mauritania. The city of Atar, the capital of the Adrar region, is a former oasis and stopping point for caravans on the road leading southwest to Nouakchott. The current city of Atar encloses a historic district Guarn El Gasba. It is the old Ksar of Atar, founded by a tribe originating from Chinguetti which shelters the tomb of their ancestor Chemsdine.
The city of Atar quickly prospered thanks to the development of trade with Moroccan cities. We then witness an extraordinary development of Ksourian architecture and town planning: closed concessions with courtyards and wells inside, narrow streets, and small public squares Rahbas.
The city of Atar has experienced significant cultural development thanks to a large number of these libraries and the school of Imam El Mejdoub, author of Kitab Al Minna, which it housed.
