Nestled in the heart of modern Cairo, the historic city founded in the 10th century, is one of the oldest Islamic cities in the world. With dozens of impressive mosques, mausoleums, century-old caravanserais, medersas, fountains, and hammams, the city is full of architectural treasures. Many civilizations have lived in historic Cairo, therefore, its architectural elements including its Islamic arabesques, Christian architecture, and Jewish ornaments make it a unique gem. The period from the ninth to the fifteenth century – also known as the Islamic Renaissance – was a golden age for the city, when the pioneers of scientists, doctors, astronomers, religious scholars, and writers had a strong influence and a great prestige that extended beyond the borders of the Islamic world.
