Oasis of Figuig

The city of Zerhoun also called Moulay Idriss or Moulay Driss Zerhoun is located 25 km from the city of Meknes in Meknes-Tafilalet in northern Morocco and takes its name after its founder. Spread over two hills at the base of Mount Zerhoun, it is the first Muslim city in North Africa. Until 1917, access to the city was only allowed for Muslim people. Nowadays, Zerhoun is still considered a sacred city. Its houses are clinging to the slope of the hill creating therefore a maze of steep little streets arranged around the sanctuary of Moulay Idriss, where rests the one who was the great-grandson of the Prophet Muhammad who fled Mecca in the 8th century to found in Morocco the first Muslim dynasty.
